DJ SPINNA + BRANDEE YOUNGER - Backyard Jazz at Industry City - 254 36th Street & 2nd  Ave-BK NY 11232 - Thursday 8•1•24*

The sonically innovative harpist Brandee Younger, is revolutionizing the harp for the digital era. Over the past 15 years, she has worked relentlessly to stretch boundaries and limitations for harpists. As a Grammy nominated artist for Best Instrumental Composition and an NAACP Image Award nominee, Brandee Younger has worked with cultural icons including, Lauryn Hill, John Legend, and Moses Sumney, as well as bringing to life the Classic Impressionistic work of Maurice Ravel. She has also shared the stage with Jazz Royalty Jack Dejohnette & Ravi Coltrane, laying down tracks with Grammy-Winning Rapper Common & Artist & Producer Ryan Leslie.  Ever-expanding as an artist, her ability to feature the Harp in genres of music where the instrument is often absent demonstrates Younger’s cross-reaching ability as a musician.

Bassist Rashaan Carter is entrenched in the NYC jazz scene and has worked with Benny Golson, Curtis Fuller and Louis Hayes, Wallace Roney, Marc Cary, Cindy Blackman, Doug and Jean Carn, Antoine Roney, Sonny Simmons, and many more. Rashaan regularly performs with a myriad of artists in and outside of New York and can be found on various recordings as well.

Makaya McCraven an esteemed virtuoso and prolific drummer, composer, and producer based in Chicago. McCraven believes that the word “jazz” is “insufficient, at best, to describe the phenomenon we’re dealing with.” The artist, who has been aptly called a “cultural synthesizer”, has a unique gift for collapsing space, destroying borders and blending past, present, and future into poly-textural arrangements of post-genre, jazz-rooted 21st century folk music. Profiled in Vice, Rolling Stone, the Guardian, and NPR, among other publications, he and the music he makes today are at the very vanguard of that phenomenon.
